SEC Tailgating

Hotty Toddy Y’all!! What a great way to kick off this school year with TWO wins!

Though the grove was nothing but HOT this weekend, I was still happy to be at a home game. There is nothing quite like Oxford on game day!

Early Friday morning, the grove gets sprinkled with little red and blue trashcans.. it’s basically like christmas! And the excitement of holding your spot in the grove all afternoon and watching those poor boys run with tents all makes it worth the while. For on game day, while decked out to the nines in nothing less than designer apparel, the chandeliers are hung, everyone wears their smile and the smell of southern food lingers. There is nothing better than an SEC school on game day.

Looking forward to many more SEC games and watching the rebels play hard!

The Very Thought of You

cvr9781451613971_9781451613971

Written by Rosie Alison, this is a very moving book. She writes with such clarity and emotion that I was in tears at many different points in her story. Joy, romance & heartbreak all surround this fine estate home and one particular child who sees it all.  This book is enriched by the innocence of childish love and the danger of grown-up heartache. Amazing and heartfelt!

“England, 31st August 1939: the world is on the brink of war. As Hitler prepares to invade Poland, thousands of children are evacuated from London to escape the impending Blitz. Torn from her mother, eight-year-old Anna Sands is relocated with other children to a large Yorkshire estate which has been opened up to evacuees by Thomas and Elizabeth Ashton, an enigmatic childless couple. Soon Anna gets drawn into their unravelling relationship, seeing things that are not meant for her eyes – and finding herself part-witness and part-accomplice to a love affair, with unforeseen consequences. A story of longing, loss and complicated loyalties, combining a sweeping narrative with subtle psychological observation, “The Very Thought of You” is not just a love story but a story about love.” -Amazon.com summary.

Garlic Peeler From The Gods

images

ONLY $9?? HOW DID I LIVE WITHOUT YOU?!?!?!?!?

This is no exaggeration.

…Okay, maybe slightly. Really though! At home chefs: How many of you press your knife against the garlic clove to break off that outer layer? Oh yes… I’m seeing quite a few hands.

I LOVE GARLIC. If you search “garlic” on my blog, I’m sure you will find several recipes. That’s because I use it for everything. It’s aroma and tang are sure to freshen up any dish.

So the bottom line is that I love garlic, but don’t love peeling it… like at all.

I was in the dark until I took a cooking class at Charleston Cook’s Maverick Kitchen. ! (Which by the way is an excellent place to take classes at or to shop!!) This product is probably the the most basic one I could ever blog about but it has been a life changer. It’s only a tube, but it works magic.

Simple place your garlic clove inside of the tube and apply pressure as your roll the tube back and forth. You will hear little crackle noises which shows that it’s working! Then slide out the garlic and BOOM! There you have it: A perfectly peeled garlic clove ready for you to mince away!!!!

Please do yourself a favor and buy yourself this divine kitchen helper. Did I mention it’s dishwasher safe? 🙂

Buy yours today at any kitchen store or by clicking here!

*hint*

Instead of using a garlic press or attempting to mince the garlic by hand, simple grate it into a paste and then add to food!

Bliss Body Scrub… Rub-a-dub-dub!

s1000165-main-hero

Lemon and sage enhance this simple yet mighty treat. Use this product all over from head to toe to leave your skin velvety-soft.

This is by far one of the most effective body scrubs I have ever used!

(Why, Dunn?) Don’t worry, I’ll tell you why..

Not only does this scrub away at the dead skin on my feet but it also allows for new skin on my elbows, knees and everywhere in-between! What makes this so effective is that you scrub this product into your skin BEFORE you shower! Yes, before! No water included. That is what really helps to clear off the dead skin cells. By scrubbing the grains, you make way for a gentle yet highly effective exfoliation.

(Plus you’ll feel like you’re at the spa while breathing in smells of lemon and sage. Then when you rinse off the scrub, you’re skin will be as smooth as a baby’s… You understand.)

Next time you’re looking for a new exfoliant, give Bliss body scrub a try! This citrus rub is sure to do the trick and won’t leave your skin red and dry.

If you do enjoy your Bliss body scrub, be sure to check out their other products at Pink Dot Beauty Bar!

3C’s: Capers, Chicken & Chickpeas

This lemon zested, garlic filled chicken is so incredibly flavorful and moist. Pair this with our warm chickpea, artichoke heart and capers mixture and you’ll have a sensual quick meal in minutes! Whipped this up tonight with what little I have in my cabinets seeing that I’ve been out of town!

What you’ll need:

4 Chicken Breats

2 large Garlic Cloves

1 Large Lemon

1 Can of Artichoke Hearts

1 Skinny bottle of Capers- almost drained

2 cans of Chickpeas

Let’s get to it!

1.  Add a 2 tablespoons of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) to a pan and heat on high.

2. Sprinkle a good amount of salt and pepper onto the chicken.

3. Using a grater, “zest” your lemon onto the chicken. Also use the grater to grate the garlic into a paste and add to chicken.

4. Add chicken to pan to sear ONLY FOR COLOR.

5. In a pyrex, dump in the cans of chickpeas, artichoke hearts and capers- as many as you want- and add in chicken.

(Feel free to slice the chicken breasts into halves if they are too large)

6. Bake @ 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes and enjoy!

This chicken will make you water at the mouth just from smelling it! The citrus punch of the lemon along with the sensual garlic flavor will make you melt. The warm chickpeas and artichoke hearts add to the overall feel of comfort that this dish provides.

Great for a quick meal for you and great leftovers or even a great easy party meal!

Rewined Candles

Rewined_Email_Header-01This re-purposed glass company was started in 2009 in beautiful Charleston, SC.  They even received a Hand Made in Charleston Award presented by Major Joe Riley.

After enjoying your wine of choice, why not recycle that bottle? And that’s exactly what Rewined does.

I personally enjoy the Riesling candle. “A sweet, lush varietal offering the scent of Asian pear, juicy tropical fruits, and ripe citrus. Look for subtle notes of honey and a light floral essence.” WHOA. Sounds amazing, right?

Steppin’ Out !

_6434116

There’s nothing better than a cute pair of shoes, am I right? My problem is that even with the cute shoes, I’m uncomfortable with my feet! No I don’t have an extra toe or something… but my heels are always dry. This leaves a rough crackle in clear view to the world. NOT OKAY.

Luckily, Deborah Lippmann understands my lack of hydration in my feet and has created “Steppin’ Out“.

This nourishing foot cream contains acai and kokum butter, aloe vera and olive oil leaving your feet in a full state of indulgence.

On first application, you’ll delight in smells of sugary sweet beach scenes. This moisturizer feels like you’re rubbing creamy butter all over your feet! (Weird analogy, but absolutely amazing feel). My feet and toes are screaming with joy that they are finally being pampered!

For feet hydration, don’t look any further.

Okay.. I love to bake, but I’m not about to be kneading out dough in the kitchen!

This is a modern and simple pie recipe that everyone is sure to love!!

So what do we need?

3 berries of your choice (I used strawberries, blueberries and blackberries)

1 package of Pillsbury Pie Crust

1 1/2 cups of sugar

splash of milk

1 lemon

butter

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
  2. In a large bowl, layer in your sugar and 3 berries of choice! Then finish with a splash of milk and squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  3. Pour filling into pie crust. Paint top of pie- either lattice work or flat top- with butter and sprinkle off with some sugar!
  4. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until the top of the pie is golden brown.
  5. Cover pie with aluminum foil in order to prevent burning and reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees

Feel free to “drain” off some excess liquid and even dust on some more sugar.

Also great to top this baby off with some ice cold vanilla bean ice cream or homemade whip cream!

Lime & Honey Glazed Salmon with a warm Black Bean Corn Salad

This is the most perfect summer dish I have ever found. It is so light, satisfying and healthy! Made this with a friend and it was sooooo delicious.20130716-175521.jpg

Do realize though that this requires more ingredients than my usual recipes…

What you will need:

Extra-virgin olive oil (4 tbsp)

1 Medium red onion (chopped)

2 large garlic cloves (chopped)

Red pepper flakes (1 tspn)

Ground cumin (1 tspn)

Salt & Pepper

Honey (3 tbsp)

Chili powder (1 tspn)

Salmon filets (about 4, 6 ounce)

1 Red bell pepper (cored, seeded & chopped)

Corn (1 can or frozen bag)

1/2 cup of chicken stock or broth

Black beans (1 can, rinsed and drained)

Fresh cilantro (handful, chopped)

Baby spinach (6 cups)

2 limes (juiced)

WHEW. Okay, let’s get started!

1. Place a medium skillet over medium heat with 2 tbsp of olive oil. Add in onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 4 minutes and stir occasionally.

2. While that is cooking, place another medium skillet over medium-high heat with the remaining 2 tbsp of olive oil.

3. In a separate dish, combine the juice of 1 lime, honey, chili powder, salt and pepper. (This will be the marinade for the salmon)

4. After coating the salmon in this mixture, add to hot skillet and cook until just cooked through. (4 minutes each side)

5. Jump back over to your first skillet with the onions and garlic and go ahead and add in the bell peppers, corn & chicken stock. Let that cook for about 3 minutes.

6. Add in black beans and cook until beans are heated through, then remove from heat and add juice from a second lime, chopped cilantro & spinach. Toss and wilt the spinach and then season to taste.

Presentation time!!

Serve the lime and honey glazed salmon over top of the warm black bean and corn salad and ta-da!!

Hope you enjoy!

86 Degrees… INSIDE!

hot-wx

Currently, it is 86 degrees on the 2nd and 3rd floors of my house. AKA everyone is dying. The air conditioning went out yesterday at some point while everyone was at work. Unfortunately, the guy couldn’t make it out to “fix” it until today. Last night was Le Miserables part 2. I had windows open, 2 fans going and even wet towels on my body. Nothing was working. #thestruggleisreal

Sooo the fix it man arrived late in the afternoon today and was not happy to be there. (Assuming he was supposed to have been off work at 5). He tore apart the upstairs bathroom ceiling to leave because he couldn’t fix it. He will apparently be back on Saturday morning(ish) with a new motor which will prevent this from happening.

Charleston-2 Roommates-0

In an attempt to stay cool, everyone has moved downstairs. It is a beautiful 71 degrees down here. Blow up mattresses have taken over our empty dining room and I am on the couch trying to get some sleep.. clearly it’s going well. But in a funny way, we are having a sleepover. Well hope all of you readers are enjoying yourselves from a nice air conditioned place… if we’re close, invite me to a sleepover. (ppllleeeaaaaassseeeeee).

Or maybe I should put out an application..
